“American Idol,” Feb. 26

26 Feb

It’s Top 10 guys night on “Idol” tonight, and it’s also 70s night. Hm, what could next week be? Can anyone say 80s?

Anwyay.

Michael Johns is up first, singing Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way.”
This guy could sing the ABC’s and I’d think it was brilliant, so I’m not the best judge.:)
Randy said: Not the best, nice song, and he wanted him to let go and feel the song.
Paula said: He’s consistent, charismatic and charming.
Simon said: It was OK, but his weakest performance so far. There was “no moment.”

Jason Castro is up singing “I Just Want to be Your Everything.” I like it. It makes me smile.
Randy said: It was cool but not a very good song for a vocalist.
Paula said: She liked the way he musically interpreted it but he needs to lose the guitar next week.
Simon said: It was horrible and too schmaltzy.

Luke Menard takes on Queen’s “Killer Queen.” And that’s about all I’ll say about that.
Randy said: It’s a really tough song to sing; he was theatrical and pitchy but “pretty good.”
Paula said: It was really great vocally.
Simon said: It was a mistake, and whereas Freddy Mercury had charisma, Luke doesn’t.

Robbie Carrico sang “Hot-Blooded,” and, all I could think about during his performance was, “Who is he singing to?” His eyes were constantly on the ceiling.
Randy said: He doesn’t have enough “ugh” to have a rock voice.
Paula said: He played it safe.
Simon said: It was OK.
There was a tiny bit of drama — Randy cut in and said rock is an attitude, not something you have to prove. So Robbie asked, why did he have to prove to them he was rock? Anyway, he was pretty defensive about the whole thing.

Danny Noriega sang the Carpenters’ take on “Superstar.” I actually liked it.
Randy said: He thought too much about how he performed, and he needs to let go.
Paula said: He has amazing vocal skill.
Simon said: It was better than last week but not fantastic, and he looks terrific on camera.

David Hernandez did a great job of “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.”
Randy said: “That’s how you put it down…that was hot.”
Paula said: It was unbelievable and perfect.
Simon said: It was the best vocal of the night so far. He was also glad that David didn’t sulk after being criticized and actually used them as a challenge.

Jason Yeager did “Long Train Running.” This is one of my and my mom’s favorite songs, so my mom was pretty peeved. “He can’t dance, either,” she said.
Randy said: It wasn’t a good singer’s song.
Paula said: It was fun to see this side of him but it didn’t show a vocal range.
Simon said: Last week was bad but this week was ordinary. He’s a good singer who can’t perform very well.

Chikezie rocked with Donny Hathaway’s “I Believe.” Sooo good.
Randy said: Chikezie is back, and it was blazing.
Paula said: It was brilliant and fun.
Simon said: He looked better and sounded better than last week. It was a million times better than last week.

David Cook sang “All Right Now” with his electric guitar. He seemed more focused on playing than singing, to me, anyway.
Randy said: He’s the real rocker of the competition.
Paula said: He’s the real deal.
Simon said: He doesn’t have a lot of charisma, but it was solid.

David Archuleta sang John Lennon’s “Imagine.” It’s simple and pretty.
Randy said: It was one of the best vocals he’s ever heard on the show — brilliant.
Paula said: “I want to dangle you from my rearview mirror.” It was one of the most moving performances she’s ever heard.
Simon said: It was really risky but it worked, and he’s the one to beat.

See you tomorrow for the girls!

What’s Going On – Princess Theater, Tim & Eric, CDs

26 Feb

Happy windy messy ugly-outside Tuesday and here’s to it getting prettier.:)

Some happiness in the form of entertainment bits:

  • Thanks to Carlie for this one: A writer, Scott Morris (no, not Scene’s M. Scott) writes about getting advice from one of my favorite profs at Ole Miss, Ace Atkins.
  • Columbus’ Princess Theater is turning 2 this weekend, and Killjay, The Cemetery Surfers, Betrayal and Frail Destruction will celebrate. Get more info here.
  • Click here to stream new records by Dolly Parton, Webbie, Cheri Dennis and Salvador Santana Band.
  • A few months ago I bought the “Angel” box set on Amazon for about $70. Today they’ve got an even better deal – today it’s $56. Get this now, folks, seriously.
  • Sure, it’s a little random, but it works: Sonic Youth will perform at the Dickson St. Music Festival in Arkansas in April.
  • Memorial Day 2009 will be a busy movie weekend – the new “Terminator” flick and the second “Night at the Museum” will open.
  • “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” is going on tour (closest date is in Atlanta).
  • I haven’t been able to post the Sarah Silverman/Jimmy Kimmel videos that are getting so much hype (sorry, I like my job and I don’t think the videos fall in line with our mission statement), but here’s a story about them.

This song makes me super-happy. It’s “American Boy” by Estelle f/ Kanye West. And now it has a video!
