27 Sep

I’ve been so busy trying to get ready for my few days out of the office lately that I’ve neglected my usual entertainment sites. Thankfully, the mighty Jeff has my back, and he sent me a slew of links to all kinds of entertainment goodies. Ladies and gents, bow down to him with me…

  • The track listing to Guitar Hero III has been leaked. “Sunshine of Your Love,” “When You Were Young” and songs by Muse and Weezer are being talked about.
  • Mississippi fiddler Ruby Jane Smith is playing with Big & Rich – again – when the duo performs at the Pearl River Resort on Oct. 12.
  • The fall schedule of Austin City Limits is up. It includes the Decemberists, Wilco, Arcade Fire, Brad Paisley and Regina Spektor are on the way.

Finally – this isn’t a piece of Jeff info, by the way 🙂 – Darren Hayes has finally released a video for “Me Myself and (I).” You can see it here.
It may not be the most amazing video ever, may not be the best song ever, but I’m in love with both. I LOVE it when someone doesn’t take themselves so seriously and has fun making music and a video, and you can tell Mr. Hayes is having a blast. Fun fun fun.

Speaking of Darren Hayes, I had the strangest dream about/not about him last night. Weird. But that’s for another day and another time. 🙂

Mistrial in Phil Spector case

Judge declares mistrial in Phil Spector murder case after jury reports deadlock

By LINDA DEUTSCH
AP Special Correspondent
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The murder trial of music producer Phil Spector ended in a mistrial Wednesday because of a deadlocked jury.
The mistrial came on the 12th day of deliberations on whether Spector murdered actress Lana Clarkson more than 4 1/2 years ago. The 12-member panel had heard about five months of testimony.
The jury foreman reported the panel was deadlocked 10 to 2 but did not indicate which way it was leaning. The jury reported a 7-5 impasse last week and had resumed deliberations with modified instructions.
“At this time, I will find that the jury is unable to arrive at a verdict and declare a mistrial in this matter,” Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler said.
Spector, 67, is charged with second-degree murder. Clarkson, 40, died when a gun went off in her mouth as she sat in a chair in the foyer of Spector’s Alhambra mansion about 5 a.m. on Feb. 3, 2003. She had met Spector just a few hours earlier at her job as a nightclub hostess and went home with him for a drink after work.
The defense contended throughout the trial that Clarkson had personal problems and died of a self-inflicted wound that was an accident or a suicide.
Prosecutors presented Spector’s chauffeur, who said that he heard a “pow” and that Spector then came outside with a gun in his hand and stated: “I think I killed somebody.”
Prosecutors also called five women from Spector’s past who testified that he long ago terrorized them with guns when they tried to leave his presence.
In a sideshow to the deliberations, authorities had said Tuesday they were investigating a possible threat to the trial judge that was posted on the Internet.
The MySpace.com posting contained the phrases “I love Phil Spector” and “The Evil Judge should DIE!!!!”
The posting was on a page called “Team Spector,” said Steve Whitmore, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. It was later taken down, Superior Court spokesman Allan Parachini said.
Sheriff’s investigators were looking into the messages, which were signed “xoxo Chelle,” according to Parachini. Spector’s wife is named Rachelle, but one of the music producer’s attorneys, Christopher Plourd, said she denied having anything to do with the notes.
Spector emerged on the music scene in the late 1950s and became a top producer using a hit-making recording technique that became known as the “Wall of Sound.” Clarkson was the star of Roger Corman’s 1985 cult film “Barbarian Queen.”

Of comic books and superheroes

26 Sep

First, let me apologize – I received my latest issue of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” season 8 last week, and I haven’t written about it until now. I’ve been meaning to get on here, start talkin’ and pray and hope that a fellow Buffy geek reads this and wants to talk, because this issue (“No Future for You”) was awesome. The return of Faith? And Robin Wood, if even for a few frames (I literally squealed – squealed – when I saw him!)? A second bad slayer? And – best of all – Giles in a “Yellow Submarine” sweater? Truly awesome. This may be my favorite issue yet.

Oh! and Giles’ last words in this issue – “Five by five”??? I mean how are we supposed to interpret that? My mind has been racing…obviously. 🙂

BTW – Click on “preview” on that page, and it’ll take you through the first six pages.

And, due to a bad shipment at TFAW, I haven’t received my first issue of The Umbrella Academy, Gerard Way’s comic. Once I get it, we’ll talk.

Alright, let’s move on to superheroes in the movies.

Want “Justice League” spoilers? Well, do ya, punk? Alright, click here.

Speaking of “Justice League,” what do you think of Jessica Biel as Wonder Woman? I’m sorry, I’m not a fan – I’ll pay her not to play Wonder Woman. But, she may be their best bet.
And finally – click here for the teaser trailer for “The Descendants.”

By the way — thanks to Jeff for all of the Office, Earl and superhero fodder for today. 🙂

Let’s talk TV

26 Sep

No wonder fall has that certain smell…it’s the smell of new tv airwaves wafting through the air.

What new shows are you loving already? Which ones are you looking forward to? What season premiers have you all hot and bothered?

For better or worse, I got myself all hyped up about The CW’s new season. I had my eye on “Reaper” and I swore I’d keep a better eye on “Smallville,” since this may be it’s last season.
Then last night I realized I don’t have The CW…so there goes that plan. 😐 I’m trying to suss out ways to watch these shows that doesn’t involve driving at least 30 minutes to someone else’s house to hijack their television sets. If you’ve got an idea, let me know.

Last night it was my mom’s TV I hijacked – she had to give up Ken Burns’ “The War” to watch “Reaper.” I liked it (and my mom did, too). Anytime there’s a man in an expensive suit talking hell and demons, I’m all for it. The line about getting some smack and killing a hooker in Vegas…priceless.

And let’s not forget NBC….Here are a few “Office” spoilers, in the form of cast videos and preview clips.

    And, by the way…FREE EARL!

    Enough’s enough

    25 Sep

So I got riled up this morning, and maybe y’all are riled up, too.

Why? I saw this story come across the wire:

    ————————————————————–

Kiefer Sutherland arrested in Los Angeles for investigation of misdemeanor drunken driving

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kiefer Sutherland was arrested early Tuesday for investigation of misdemeanor drunken driving after he was stopped for making an illegal U-turn and failed a field sobriety test, authorities said.
The actor was pulled over about 1:10 a.m. in West Los Angeles, said Officer Kevin Maiberger.
Sutherland, 40, tested over the state’s legal blood alcohol limit of .08 percent, said Officer Karen Smith. Police declined to say what his blood-alcohol level was.
Sutherland spokeswoman Annett Wolf declined to comment.
The actor was released around 4 a.m. after posting $25,000 bail, according to Sheriff’s Department records.
Maiberger said Sutherland was scheduled to appear in court Oct. 16.
Sutherland won a best actor Emmy last year for his role as agent Jack Bauer on the Fox TV series “24.” The series is set to return to the air in January.

    ————————————————————–

Keifer. Paris. Nicole. Lindsay. Mel. Eve.

There’s more than just those, but they’re the most recent.

I’m tired of hearing about celebrities getting DUIs. These folks all seem pretty intelligent – yes, even Paris – so why do they do something so stupid?

We teach children not to drive drunk. I guarantee it – ask a 10-year-old, and they’ll tell you, don’t drive drunk. It’s common sense.

I’ve seen local tipsy folks dish out money for a cab, and most of the time, they don’t have to beg and plead to find a designated driver.

What – do these celebrities just not have any money? I find that one hard to believe. Do they not party with sober pals, or isn’t there anyone they can call to drive them home?

I don’t have anything against drinking, but drinking and driving is a whole other story. It’s something that can – and probably will – kill you, and you’ll probably take someone else out with you. Brilliant plan, that one.

These types of DUI stories really don’t affect anyone’s day-to-day life, and I hope most young girls are looking to teens like Miley Cyrus as a role model rather than Nicole or Paris. Still, it just gets old to see these kinds of stories. I’d much rather read about the upcoming season of 24 rather than read about Keifer’s stupid mistake.

If a DUI is the latest Hollywood must-have, I’ll have to pass on that one.

What do you think? Talk with me.

    Show venue change

    25 Sep

The Drumm and Dic birthday bash featuring 12 Stones, Saliva and Vysion is NOT taking place at the Princess as scheduled.

The show has been moved to Goodtime Charlie’s in Tupelo instead.

The show is tomorrow night at 8 p.m., and tickets are $20. Call 456-3654 for tickets.

Thanks to Randy and Joshua for the tip.
