What’s Going On – ‘Twilight,’ Cash, Jay-Z

31 Jul

Happy Thursday, dears.

Donna Summer’s “Love to Love You Baby” just came on my iPod. Feels kinda strange listening to that song at work. Thank goodness it’s only like a 3-minute version and not the super-long, super-dirty version…

As I’m sure a lot of y’all know, the final book in the “Twilight” series, “Breaking Dawn,” will be released Saturday. Any of y’all going to a midnight party or anything?

Books-A-Million in Tupelo is having a midnight party. I’ll be in Memphis late Friday so I’m going to see if I can find a party up there to sneak into. 🙂 Hit back up here and tell us about any parties you go to…

Newsy bits.

  • Speaking of the “Twilight” series, USA Today has a profile on the author.
  • Want to learn more about Johnny Cash’s life without watching “Walk the Line”? PBS will air a special about him on Aug. 5.
  • Howard Stern is remaking the Ramones’ “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School.”

Scene Picks

Some happenings this weekend and coming week….

  • Heaven’s Highway is releasing its new CD, “Deep Roots,” tonight at the Furniture Market Building 5 in Tupelo.
  • The Wizard crew and M. Scott Morris liked “Step Brothers.” It’s playing across NeMiss.
  • Help out a budding musician by going to the Ron Dozier Tribute concert at Musician’s Playground on Saturday. Scene can tell you more.
  • Full Tilt will rock Benjamin’s Friday night.
  • The Union County Fair is this weekend.

Oh yeah, and…

They’ll screen flicks by the likes of Daniel Lee, Kary Rogers, April Wren and others.

What’s Going On – Harry Potter trailer, Tim Burton

30 Jul

Afternoon, loves!

Sorry I’m getting this up so late but I’ve spent a good part of my day at an interview and doing research. Then proofing Scene pages. I’m busy. Like a bee.

Two cool albums I’ve heard lately: Izza Kizza’s “Kizzaland Mixtape” (which you can get at his MySpace page for free!) and “The Bake Sale” by The Cool Kids. Both hip-hop/rap albums, so pick them up if you are so inclined.

Newsy bits!

  • Woo-hoo! “Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince” trailer! That looks awwwwesome.
  • Speaking of awwwwesome, the new B.B. King CD sounds just that.
  • Even more Comic-Con star photos. New ones are mixed in with older ones.

CoryTaylorCox, Empires, The Embrace, Farewell Flight – 7/28

29 Jul

Last night was CoryTaylor Cox, The Embrace, Empires and Farewell Flight at Musician’s Playground in Tupelo.

I’ve said it a hundred times before, but I really want to cover more local shows. Last night I brought one of my closest friends, Crissy, with me to the show.

Lucky for me, she loves taking photos – something I’m not that great at doing. So she took the photos for me. You can see her vision changed often during the show. For some shots, she went for the artsy, messy kind; for others, she wanted to give you a look at what it was like to be there, and they’re very clear and from the back.

Get the story and see the photos by clicking “Keep Reading.”

What’s Going On – ‘Breaking Dawn,’ Dylan, Dr. Horrible

29 Jul

Mornin’, dears.

Check back here later today for photos from last night’s CoryTaylorCox/Empires/The Embrace/Farewell Flight show…

  • Conor Oberst’s new solo disc is streaming on his Web site. Remember, he’s playing Oxford in September.
  • Former “Idol” contestant Melinda Doolittle has a spankin’ new record deal.
  • Click here to see the first trailer for Oliver Stone’s Bush biopic, “W.” I’m on the fence as to whether or not I want to see this, and the trailer just continued to muddle it for me.
  • Trace Adkins’ new CD drops in November.

What’s Going On – ‘Idol,’ photos, new music

28 Jul

Merry Monday, loves.

Hope everything is going well in your world! What did you do this weekend?

Mine was, as usual, pretty quiet, which was nice. I made a super-awesome coconut and caramel cheesecake. I’ve got a portable DVD player so I usually watch movies while I bake. I’ve discovered this: the better the movie I watch, the better my cheesecakes turn out. This time around it was “Once.” I think the best cheesecake I’ve ever made, I made it to “Casablanca.” I’m beginning to believe there’s a science to this…

OK. I’m rambling too much for a Monday morning.

Here go the newsy bits:

  • Want the new Kings of Leon single for free? Click here.
  • T.I.’s new album has been pushed back a few weeks. Don’t you hate it when they change release dates?
  • Liz Phair is finishing her spankin’ new CD.
  • It ain’t exactly news, but I loved these star portraits from Comic-Con. Stars include four of my favorite people ever: Joss Whedon, Gerard Way, Michael C. Hall and Gerard Butler. *sigh* Also, check out photos from the stars of “Chuck,” the new “Lost Boys” movie, “Repo! The Genetic Opera” and “The Spirit.”
  • Again, it ain’t exactly news, but I love 9513’s feature “Forgotten Artists.” The country music blog takes a look at Johnny Darrell and Charley Pride.
