“American Idol,” 2/3

4 Feb

Hollywood Week kicked off on “Idol” last night.

Here are a few highlights…

The first round of auditions in Hollywood were the simple stand-in-line-sing-something-acapella auditions.

147 contestants were put into groups of eight to perform for the judges. After all eight contestants performed, the judges kicked off some right then and there. After two days of this first round, 104 contestants were left.

The contestants also went through an “Idol Bootcamp.” A vocal team helped them with their vocals and song choice, while a hair and make-up team helped them with make-overs. Barry Manilow also spoke with the contestants.

Starkville’s Jasmine Murray was featured in last night’s episode. She sang Kelly Clarkson’s “The Trouble with Love Is.” Judge Kara DioGuardi said Muarry has a “raw, natural talent.” She’s through to the next round.

Lil Rounds, a contestant from Memphis, wowed the judges with her very Whitney version of “I Will Always Love You.”

Stephen Fowler bowled everyone over with his rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Superwoman.” He was really terrific and I can’t wait to see what he does next.

Rose Flack seemed to lose her cool, worried that other contestants have more talent. Her take on “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” was still good, though.

It was my first time to see Danny Gokey and Jamar Rogers, both of whom I really liked, especially Danny. Lil Rounds, Danny, Jamar, Rose and Stephen are all through to the next round.

An early favorite of mine, Emily Wynne-Hughes, planned to sing “I Put a Spell on You” but changed her song at the last minute to No Doubt’s “Excuse Me Mister.” It was pretty scary since she basically impersonated Gwen Stefani – not a good move. Either way, she’s through.

Nick “Normal Gentle” Mitchell sang “And I Am Telling You I Am Not Going” – again, and again as “Norman Gentle.” It’s so weird. Yeah, he can sing, but I don’t think he can drop the Gentle act. Oddly enough, the judges still put him through to the next round.

I have had it up to here with Katrina “Bikini Girl” Darrell. She sang Faith Hill’s “Breathe.” Sure, she has a decent voice, but that’s just it: a decent voice, not a great voice. On top of that, she’s incredibly disrespectful and rude to DioGuardi. If Simon Cowell is going to keep letting contestants like her through – based soley on her looks – I’m going to stop watching the show. She’s through to the next round but I’m so ready for her to go.

What did you think about last night’s episode?
