Ask Scene! Answers

I come humbly before you to answer your questions…

If you’ve got a question, send it in and I’ll answer it on Dec. 22.

Is there any comic book shops in the Tupelo area? – Will
Sorry it’s taken me so long to get back with you, Will.
Comics and Stuff was a major store in town, but Scene Now reader Scratch tells me it has closed. Check his comment in the comments section for info on a new store in town.
Books-A-Million has a small selection, but Barnes and Nobles is next to nothing. The day B&N opened here in town, I asked one of the employees about their tiny comics section. I was told this B&N would not focus much on comics at all unless customers asked for it. So, I asked. Can’t say it did anything…guess they need more than just one voice.

More questions after the jump!

What are the big music events in Tupelo, Oxford or Starkville in January? Thanks for taking these questions. -tupeloalan
Good question!
January is starting off slow but pretty steady.
The biggest shows I know about include Colour Revolt and Alejandro Escovedo at Proud Larry’s in Oxford on Jan. 23 and 31, respectively.
Charlie Mars will perform at Rick’s Cafe in Starkville on Jan. 21.
Crossin Dixon will perform at The Lyric Oxford on Jan. 23, followed by Lucero on the 29th.
I’m planning a big section on What’s Coming in 2009 for the Jan. 8 issue of Scene – so be on the lookout for that.

Are there any Christmas Lights around that blink to the music? – JRAY
If there are…*sigh*…I don’t know about them. If I hear of any, though, I’ll be sure to put it up on here! I hear there’s music out at Cottonplant (on the way to Ripley on 15), but I haven’t been there this year yet.

Are you jealous that I’m going to see Duran Duran in concert tomorrow (saturday) night? – Scratch
You know I am! Now, Scratch, I must ask you: Are you hungry like the wolf? 🙂 Seriously, how did it go?

My uncle owns Christmas in Cottonplant…I’m the one that runs the snow machines. LOL But we do have a music light show. You have to follow the pathway around and cross a little bridge to see it. We have benches out there so you can sit and drink your hot chocolate and watch. The show is alot longer this year and he’s added some new elements to the show..it’s really cool. It’s open from 6p-9p.

The Duran Duran concert was out-friggin-standing! I never got to see them back in the day, but I don’t see how they could have sounded any better. If you ever get a chance to see them, run…don’t walk. It’s totally worth it.

Now, regarding comic shops, Comics and Stuff closed a few months ago. However, a new store has opened on Auburn Road right off the 78 exit. It’s in the far end of the building that houses the BP. I actually suggested the other day that the manager give you a call or check out Scene.

As far as the blinking Christmas lights go, there’s a superb display on E. Countiss St. in Bruce. At an hour from Tupelo, I can tell you it’s worth the trip. They have several nice restaurants and the Bollinger Family Theater also has shows on Saturday nights. But I digress. The lights are done by the Keon family and they are awesome. There’s a steady stream of cars through there every night during this time of they year. Just tune your radio to 102.1? (not 100% sure on this; there are signs) and enjoy the spectacle.

Thanks for the extra info on Cotton Plant, Johnathon! I think we’re heading that way sometime soon.

Thanks for correcting me there, Scratch — I’ll edit the post so it will be correct.
I’m ashamed to say I never bought my comics locally — I use Things From Another World (tfaw.com). They’re good on prices and generally support Joss Whedon-related products/causes well (I know they are big supporters of Can’t Stop the Serenity, which I help out with).
And thanks for the Duran Duran concert update! I LOVE those guys but I’ve never had the chance to see them. 😦 Maybe one of these days… 🙂

Thanks for the Bruce info, James! That sounds like it’s worth the drive!
