In the Arena, 7/25

24 Jul

It’s hard to believe that school starts back in two weeks (or less, depending on your school district). Summer vacation seems to be a lot shorter now than back in the “good old days.” I need to watch myself here or before you know it, I’ll be telling tales about walking two miles uphill in the snow to get to school each day. Speaking of snow, wouldn’t some cooler weather be nice? Then again, it is July in Mississippi. We’re not exactly known for our cool climate…

But enough stream of consciousness rambling. This week’s topic is improvements to the Arena. We’re working on several projects right now, not all of which will be obvious to the untrained eye. We have changed the color scheme in the meeting room hallways to better match the replacement carpet that was installed during the winter. We also replaced the ceiling tile in the meeting room lobby, giving the area a much more inviting look. Some other projects we are studying include:

Installing handrails in the upper level seating bowl
Replacing lighting fixtures in the arena with more energy-efficient models
Implementing a recycling program for all events
Converting to a handheld bar code scanner entry system for ticketed events
Purchasing additional curtains to allow for greater flexibility in setting up events
Updating our concessions menu to offer a wider variety of popular items

All of these upgrades are possible thanks to the tremendous support the community has shown us over the past year. Bookings, attendance, and revenue are all up over previous years.

So that’s a partial list of improvements we are trying to make to the facility for the coming year. We hope that you, our patrons, will appreciate these upgrades. Now’s your chance: what changes would you like to see us make to the Arena? Personally, I would love to see the addition of suites and another 5,000 seats, but that’s not quite in our budget. Let me know your thoughts.

Until next time,

I see that the fair is coming to Tupelo. Is that the same one that is in Verona or is it coming back to the downtown area? Also I noticed on pollstar that the comedy show wasn’t listed. Is it canceled or does pollstar not list everything for us.

    Hey Stangreb,

I don’t know about the fair..I’ll check up on that.

As far as I know, the comedy show is still on, of course Todd can tell us better. I interviewed both comedians Thursday and they still talked like it was still on! 🙂 Pollstar is the most reliable but even they get some things wrong sometimes.

Thanks Sheena, I also wish there could be another 5,000 seats added.

Ya know, actually, I kind of like that the Arena is the size that it is. You can see big-name acts – Kid Rock, Kelly & Reba, Sugarland – in a fairly intimate space. There really isn’t a bad seat. I’d like it a lot less if it were the size of, say, the Pyramid (well, back in the day lol).

Another 5,000 would also make it easier to bring in bigger acts. But you are right, there isn’t a bad seat in the house.

By the way, Stangreb, I check with our city reporter Emily LeCoz, and she said officials are still deciding whether or not to have it. She said we should know something definite next week.

If you’re in the mood for a fair, the New Albany/Union County fair is this weekend, per fellow Scene scribe M. Scott Morris.

Thanks for the info. But I think I will wait for the cooler weather for the fair.
