“What a crazy random happenstance.”

20 Jul

OK, OK, OK – if there are ANY Joss Whedon/Dr. Horrible fans out there, let’s talk!!!

The third act of “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” blew my poor feeble mind away. I know I should’ve seen it coming, especially being such a huge Whedonite, but man, I didn’t. I think I sobbed — no joke, sobbed — for 30 minutes straight. I kinda feel like I need therapy now.
But in between all the sobbing, there was a lot of laughing – because this is, after all, dear Joss & Co.

The first two acts were amazing. The third one is too, but it took a couple of viewings for me to really appreciate it. As a whole, I think the entire show was wonderful. The entire cast was excellent.

If you watched “Dr. Horrible,” what did you think?

>Who’s your favorite: Dr. Horrible or Captain Hammer?
>The Evil League of Evil – discuss!
>Moist: Could he become the next Willow?
>”The status is NOT quo.” Do you have a favorite line or song?
>What do you think will happen in the sequel(s) (come on, you know there will be sequels!)?

There will be, of course, spoilers in any comments, so beware!

Remember! All three acts of “Dr. Horrible” are still streaming for free until midnight tonight (Sunday), and you can buy all three episodes at iTunes.

    1. Tough one… Penny… but I think I am a bit biased.
    2. They were named, it was funny.
    3. Moist’s funny
    4. “My p—s is The Hammer.” without a doubt!
    5. I can only imagine…

    1) DEFINETLY Dr. Horrible! He’s not evil, he’s just trying to right societies wrongs and if he needs to break a few laws to get there, then so be it. It’s very much like Firefly in that way, Mal isn’t evil, we all know that. He is just trying to lead a normal life without conforming to society. Wow I read way too much into things!
    2) The Evil League of Evil is such a cool name, dontcha think? I love the songs they perform.
    3) Hmm… Anything’s possible.
4)It’s a tie between “Lacy gently wafting curtains” and “Like with pie” My fave song is “Brand New Day”.
    5) I don’t know, I’m too busy hoping there’s gonna be a sequel to be worrying about what’s gonna happen in them.

I can’t wait for the CD and DVD to come out, both of which have been confirmed, if you follow Dr. Horrible on Twitter. Overall, I think I liked the songs in Act II the best. Id be interested in people’s interpretation of the ending. Specifically, exactly what was meant by the final frame of Dr. Horrible, dressed in plain clothes, sitting in front of his video blog

  4. sheenabarnett July 21, 2008 at 8:57 am #

My favorite is definitely Dr. Horrible. I thought it would be Captain Hammer — I am SUCH a Nathan Fillion fan, and he did such a wonderful job — but, dude, Neil Patrick Harris won me over. I thought he was phenomenal.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the Evil League of Evil!! OK, I didn’t see that Penny was going to die, but I totally knew — assumed? guessed? — that Bad Horse was, well, a horse. I love Dead Bowie and Fake Thomas Jefferson.

I love Moist! Of course I was kinda joking that he’d be the next Willow. But I think he, and his super power, are hilarious.

Favorite song..man, that’s tough. But I do love “Brand New Day.” The laundromat song is adorable.
Favorite line? “…and now he’s taking her out on dates and they’re probably going to French kiss or something.” No idea why I love that line but dude, I almost cried from laughing so hard. OH! I also love “I hold a Ph.D. in horribleness!” LOVE IT!

As for the sequels, gosh, I don’t even know.

    Which act is your favorite?

I think almost everyone is saying Act II is the best.

Ashleigh and Mickey, I think you both touch on important points — like that Dr. Horrible really isn’t evil. And now that he has done something evil (or at least kinda evil…it’s not like he MEANT to kill Penny), he has no feelings at all.
That last scene — as you pointed out, Mickey — is brilliant. Effing brilliant.

I just read where if you look at the last scene, Dr. Horrible is in normal street clothes, and he is just in a plain basement, with none of the stuff that used to be there. They said that implied that all the super hero stuff was in his head. Kinda cool.

  6. sheenabarnett July 21, 2008 at 9:59 am #

I just watched that, Mickey — you’re right. Gosh, that’s weird. Kind of like that episode of “Buffy” where it was kind of left up to the viewer to decide if all of the slayer stuff was something she’d created. Dang. That’s weird!!

  7. Mickey Gousset July 21, 2008 at 12:16 pm #

The other implication there is that all he has left is the Evil League of Evil. As such, he devotes himself to his work, and has moved all his stuff there. However, he lost everything in gaining his power, so now he sits in his basement with nothing, remembering everything he has lost.

Either way, I’m buying the DVD and CD once they come out. 😀 Now its time to wait and see what sort of copycat websites try and build off of what Dr. Horrible has created.

  8. sheenabarnett July 21, 2008 at 12:36 pm #

Ah — true, true. Gosh. I love how it leaves us wondering, though.

I’ve already bought it on iTunes — it’s SO nice to have all three acts on my iPod! — but I’m definitely getting the CD and DVD.

I guess you’ve heard about the musical commentary? That is going to be so rad.

Yeah I think it will be interesting to see who tries to recreate the Dr. Horrible magic. No one can defeat the Joss!

  9. sheenabarnett July 21, 2008 at 1:38 pm #

Here’s what Joss said today about a sequel: “We’d love to, but it wouldn’t be simple and it wouldn’t be soon.”

You can read the whole Joss chat at:

I supposed I may have to join the IPod crowd after all. It looks like the CD is going to be released first on iTunes.

And yes, I am looking forward to the musical commentary. I suspect it will be as good as watching Monty Python and the Holy Grail in its original Mandarine Chinese (an option available on the DVD, believe it or not).

  11. Howler July 21, 2008 at 6:41 pm #

Dr. Horrible was ten kinds of awesome.

“All the birds are singing THAT YOU’RE GONNA DIE!”

And I disagree a bit about the Doc. I think he is evil, in his way, or at least criminally insane. (Notice all the pained blinks that Harris throws in throughout – a nice affectation.) And while he says his ultimate motivation is social change, he still wants to be in control of an anarchist society – a Whedonesque oxymoron.

Note that he believes he can win over his sweetheart by offering her “a shiny new Australia.” (A nod to Lex Luthor’s plan in Superman II, I believe.)

And while his hesitation indicated that he MAY not have followed through on his plan to kill the Cap’n, (who was no saint, but seemed to do the rightish thing for uber-selfish reasons more often than not) Doc did not show true remorse after chicky-poo died, but used the death of a friend to feed his ambition. That’s evil. And kinda cold.

As for the last scene, I considered that it may have all been in his head, but ultimately I think the wearing of black “normal” clothes signifies the lie that he’s singing. He’s Doc Horrible in his red outfit and gloves and he “won’t feel a thing” – and yet, inside he is still just Billy-buddy and he is in mourning (hence, black clothes).

In any case, I totally loved it and will definitely buy the DVD.

    Man, Howler, you’re good…

I think what I love best about “Dr. Horrible” — and a lot of Joss’ work, really — is that there’s a lot open to interpretation. People are so divided on how evil (or not) Dr. Horrible is, how he reacted to Penny’s death (if at all), etc.

I’ve read a lot of Penny hate across the Web — saying, basically, that Penny isn’t a strong female character and that she is almost without a personality at all. I really disagree — I don’t think I’d have been so upset if she was completely without personality. But at the same time, I don’t think she *needed* a strong personality, because the show was never about her at all. It’s about Dr. Horrible.

  13. sheenabarnett July 22, 2008 at 11:08 am #

Is that Buffy in the audience?

It looks like her, but I don’t know, she seems to run away screaming from anything Buffy/Joss related so I’d be shocked if she really showed up.

  14. Drew Kolar July 23, 2008 at 2:04 pm #

    >Who’s your favorite: Dr. Horrible or Captain Hammer?

Dr. Horrible, DUH. Although I also LOVE Penny to death (errm… yeah…)

    >The Evil League of Evil – discuss!

LMAO@ Bad Horse. Also, future Halloerrn costume: Dead Bowie. I already pull off an excellent Bowie, so I figure combining that with the Whedonverse would ultimately ROCK HARD.

    >Moist: Could he become the next Willow?

If you mean by turning gay, witnessing his lover’s accidental murder, turning evil and trying to destroy the world, ultimately redeeming himself, and becoming an all-powerful GOOD witch, thus changing the face of the world as we know it by making all potential slayers REAL slayers? Well, not so much… but I would enjoy some sexual tension between Moist and the Pink Pummeler… Moist also pulls off “sidekick” pretty well.

    >”The status is NOT quo.” Do you have a favorite line or song?

“It’s a brand new day. Yeah the sun is high. All the angels sing… because you’re gonna DIE!”

Also… “The hammer is my p—s.” is pretty amazing. (Why the self-censorship of “p—s” BTW? Last I checked, it was totally an okay word to say.)

Penny’s songs also are just so cute and sweet!

    >What do you think will happen in the sequel(s) (come on, you know there will be sequels!)?

Penny is revived, in that old comic book fashion, and becomes a superheroine that Dr. Horrible must face, therefore throwing him back into the moral and emotional conflict that he seems to have blocked out in the end by becoming truly “evil.”

  15. sheenabarnett July 23, 2008 at 3:43 pm #

Ah! I love the idea of a Dead Bowie Halloween costume. Fake Thomas Jefferson would be fun too.

A lot of folks seem to think Penny may be revived. For the most part, in Whedonverse, when somebody’s dead, they’re dead (except, say, Buffy, Angel, etc.) but you never know.

Yeah. Sorry for the censorship…but I worry that if I don’t, my bosses will censor the blog FOR me…and may censor me in the process..OK, my joke there failed. But I’m just doing my duty.

  16. Raleighfan July 25, 2008 at 2:13 am #

Dr Horrible is my fave! It IS all about him, after all. The Evil League of Evil is a great name. I was wondering if Bad Horse would be a real horse and was quite satisfied when he turned out to be one.

    Favorite lines:

    “The status is not quo.”
    “The hammer is my p—s.”
“It’s a good day to be homeless.”
    “We do the weird stuff!”
    “I hate the homeless
-ness problem that plagues our city.”

I love the idea of Penny returning as a less self-involved superhero than Captain Hammer.

  17. sheenabarnett July 25, 2008 at 11:22 am #

Hey Raleigh — ya know, I didn’t see that Penny was gonna die, but I did see that Bad Horse was a horse. I guess my brain just works…differently. lol

OMG “We do the weird stuff!” is definitely one of my favorite moments!! I LOVE it!

More and more folks are talking about Penny returning as a superhero. You never know with Joss!

  18. Pagan July 25, 2008 at 12:27 pm #

Dr. Horrible or Captain Hammer? Both. I wonder if after t-shirts they’ll offer Capt. Hammer boxer shorts with a hammer on them.
    >The Evil League of Evil – discuss! The Bad Horse singers are great. “So make the Bad Horse happy, or he’ll make you his mare.”
    >Moist: Could he become the next Willow? He needs to be the start of a group of hencemen. Another could be itchy. They could all just make things uncomfortable or inconvient. I love how you can guess the Purple Pummeler’s name just by the costume.
    >”The status is NOT quo.” Do you have a favorite line or song? “I don’t go to the gym. I’m just naturally like this” (with that how-great-am-I expression on Cap’s face.
    >What do you think will happen in the sequel(s) (come on, you know there will be sequels!)? It’s Joss. Anything can happen. Maybe Moist will die. I await the sequels eagerly. Let’s see more of the obsessed fans.

  19. Pagan July 25, 2008 at 12:45 pm #

Apologies for the errors – Henchmen, Pink Pummeler, Etc.

  20. sheenabarnett July 26, 2008 at 11:03 am #

Hey Pagan — what a great product idea!! I love it!

I just got my Dr. Horrible T-shirt in — the red one with NPH’s face on it. I loves it.

Yeah we haven’t even discussed the genius of the Bad Horse singers. I love how, in the end, they’re there kind of singing — just like always — but in slo-mo. Brilliant!

  21. shannarie August 18, 2008 at 8:35 am #

If you watched “Dr. Horrible,” what did you think? it was completely awesome. the songs were catchy and i loved it 😀

    >Who’s your favorite: Dr. Horrible or Captain Hammer? dr horrible. captain hammer is a jerk
    >The Evil League of Evil – discuss!
none of the other evil league of evil members look … evil. lol. i think dr horrible could totally take over 😀
    >Moist: Could he become the next Willow? nah
    >”The status is NOT quo.” Do you have a favorite line or song? what a crazy random happenstance is my favorite line. the song “the evil inside of me is on the rise” that is a great song
    >What do you think will happen in the sequel(s) (come on, you know there will be sequels!)? i think dr horrible will make a machine to go back in time (or im hoping he will) and go back to that moment when captain hammer is about to fire and do something. so penny doesnt die. cuz that was a saddddd moment. i also have the idea that captain hammer will turn to the dark side and dr horrible will be a good guy 😀
