“American Idol,” May 13

13 May

Tonight, the Top 3 had three songs to sing. One was picked by the judges, one by the producers and one by the contestants themselves.

David Archuleta went first, and Paula chose “And So It Goes” (originally by Billy Joel) to perform. It was pretty but I’ll always prefer the original.
Randy said: David is in the zone.
Paula said: It was a pure and stunning performance.
Simon said: It was a bit predictable; good but not outstanding.

Randy chose “If I Ain’t Got You” (Alicia Keys) for Syesha. Usually I don’t think anyone can do Alicia like Alicia, but Syesha did a really great job.
Randy said: She did an amazing job.
Paula said: It’s hard to do a song by an artist as original as Alicia Keys, but Syesha looked great.
Simon said: It sounded too much like the original.

David Cook’s song was “First Time I Ever Saw Your Face” (Roberta Flack), chosen by Simon. I really liked it until he screamed at the end.
Randy said: He wanted more rock.
Paula said: It’s one of her favorite songs and now David is her second favorite person who sings it.
Simon said: It was one of his best performances.

Next round: Songs the contestants chose.

David A. sang Chris Brown’s “With  You.” I don’t know, it just didn’t feel right.
Randy said: It wasn’t the right song.
Paula said: It was perfect and another side of who he is.
Simon said: “It was like a chihuahua trying to be a tiger…it was all a bit awkward.”

Syesha sang Peggy Lee’s “Fever.” She sang it well but she really put on a show, complete with a chair and dancing around the upright bass player.
Randy said: She sang it well but it was a “very interesting song choice.”
Paula said: She was surprised Syesha chose that song, and it didn’t show who Syesha is as an artist.
Simon said: She’ll regret this performance tomorrow night, because it was “quite a lame cabaret performance.”

David Cook sang “Dare You to Move” by Switchfoot. It seemed like David fell asleep through it, and so did I. Boring.
Randy said: Great song choice but his vocals were pitchy.
Paula said: She didn’t like how the song was cut down.
Simon said: it was what was expected.

Round three: Songs chosen by the producers

The producers chose “Longer” by Dan Fogelberg for David Archuleta…again…zzzz. I’ve seen this kid do WAY too many ballads.
Randy said:  He’s in the zone.
Paula said: It was a lovely performance.
Simon said: It’s enough to take him to the top 2.

Syesha was given “Hit Me Up” by Gia Farrell (from the “Happy Feet” soundtrack). Apparently the producers hate her, because instead of giving her something where she could show off, they just gave her a bouncy song to bounce her way through.
Randy said: It was alright.
Paula said: She sang it well but it probably won’t get her in the top 2.
Simon said: Her best moment was last week, and this was forgettable.

David Cook was given “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” by Aerosmith. He sang it almost just like the original…and again I fell asleep…Aerosmith pretty well knocked this one out of the park when they did it, so any other versions sound like bad karaoke to me.
Randy said: He loved the song but it was very predictable.
Paula said: “See you in the finals.”
Simon said: “David Cook wins the night.”

I would finish this with, “check back tomorrow to see who’s voted off!” But I think we all know who’s going home…

The producers dont “hate her”, there is only so much you can do with little talent. She was out shined all night by the other contestants. The truth is, she is lucky to be in he top 3. Carley and Michael are much better. I’ll be glad when she’s gone.
