What’s Going On – Paul Thorn, Idol, Velvet Revolver

2 Apr

Happy kinda-yucky-outside Wednesday, Scene cats.

  • You probably know all about it by now, but “American Idol” contestant David Cook was sent to the hospital last night. Sounds like he’s doing better.
  • You can listen to Reba, you can watch Reba, and now you can wear Reba shoes.
  • “Machete,” a spin-off from “Grindhouse,” could be coming to a big screen near you.

“Legally Blonde” the musical?! HOW FABULOUS!

Anyway, I found this little write-up in the Vail Daily News and thought of you.

“Is it just me or are all of the really good indie-rock bands coming from the South right now?”

Also, I got the following e-mail from a friend in NYC and was hoping you could help point him in the right direction.

“What’s the dil w/ the North Mississippi Allstars? Theyre getting a lot of pub lately. I downloaded a bunch of their songs, I dig ’em for sure. And why
didn’t you tell me about them earlier? You cant keep all the good deep southern music to yourself you know! Anyone else I should check out?”

I immediately think of Colour Revolt, Waverly and Josh Kelley. Who else can I tell him about?

“Fans of “Moonlight” are trying to save their favorite show.”

I thought this was canceled in like 1987 or something—wait, that was Moonlighting. Nevermind…..

    Howdy Carlie,

Ohh, thanks for the link! That new Colour Revolt record is so, so, so incredibly good.

I haven’t had a chance to hear the Black and Whites out of Oxford, but I hear nothing but amazing buzz about them. They’re a band I hope to get in Scene soon.

I’m also sweet on Young Agent Jones out of Starkville. They’re not necessarily “indie” rock, just plain rock, but they’re good. Good guys, too. Their new record is on iTunes.

If your buddy is into punk/metal, tell him to check out The Cooters. Again, not “indie rock,” but fans of punk or metal will LOVE this band. They are phenomenal live and they’re on iTunes.

I’m friending as many local bands as possible on Scene’s MySpace page, so tell him to check out myspace.com/scenenow to see some local acts on MySpace.

The Cooters, yeah that’s the ticket.
