What’s Going On – Local events, sci-fi TV, tours

25 Mar

Local happenings and newsy bits…oh, by the way, happy Tuesday, my super-rad Scene cats…

  • In this week’s Scene we’ll feature a story on Avenue Hearts. You can catch the band tonight at Proud Larry’s. Sanders Bohlke will open. The show will start about 9:30 or 10 p.m. and is free.
  • Purple Haze in Oxford is starting an open mic night on Sundays. The first one is this Sunday and it starts at 6 p.m.
  • Also this weekend, the Independent Film Series will present “Angela’s Decision” at 6:30 p.m. at the Link Centre in Tupelo.
  • Some folks at other blogs were stumped by this lyrics quiz. The lyrics to popular songs are arranged in alphabetical order – so it’s pretty tough. I got about half of them right. Try it for yourself here.
  • Thanks to the mighty copy desk cat Heath for this – Amazon is featuring a sale on sci-fi TV today. You can get seasons of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” “The X-Files,” “Dark Angel,” “Stargate SG-1,” and more for as low as $20. Some entire series are cheap, too.
  • Want to see George Michael live? The closest date on his upcoming U.S. tour is in – big surprise – Atlanta.
  • Want to see Maroon 5 and Counting Crows on tour this summer? Their dates are closer – try Birmingham in September.
  • I can has new CDs? Stream new records by Panic at the Disco and Gnarls Barkley here.

Thanks to Leslie for this – it’s “Peep Show II,” a collection of dioramas featuring Peeps. My favorite are the movie-based ones, like “No Country for Old Peeps” and “Peepbusters,” and the ones spoofing “A Christmas Story,” the prisoner “Thriller” dance and “American Idol.”

Don’t forget to check back tonight for “Idol” recap!
