In the Arena, 1/18

BY TODD HUNT

Last week’s blog focused on the history of the concert business. This week’s blog takes the opposite approach by looking at the upcoming events here in the BancorpSouth Arena. Hopefully you’ll find something that interests you among this diverse offering…

January 24 – the Royal Lipizzaner Stallions return to Tupelo. If you’ve never seen them before, the horses are simply beautiful.

January 25-26 – the North Mississippi Championship Rodeo stampedes into the building. This annual event brings out the inner cowboy in our staff…

February 9 – Bill Gaither and Friends returns. It’s been three years since the Gaithers brought their traveling gospel show to Tupelo. Ticket sales are always strong for this event.

February 10 – Winter Jam 2008. Mercy Me, New Song, Skillet, Barlow Girl, and American Idol’s Mandisa lead the bill for this year’s Winter Jam. This should be our first sellout of 2008.

February 14 – Reba/Kelly Clarkson. What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day? Ticket sales are brisk for this show but a handful of good seats still remain.

February 16 – Rickey Smiley and Friends. Blog readers are among the first to hear about the upcoming show by this extremely funny performer. This will be in our theatre setup which should make for an intimate event.

February 20 – Kid Rock’s Rock and Roll Revival Tour with Rev. Run and Dickey Betts. We knew that the package was Kid Rock with Rev. Run, but Dickey Betts as well? All three performers will be backed by the Twisted Brown Trucker band. Only Kid Rock could bring together members of Run-DMC and the Allman Brothers for your listening pleasure…

On top of these entertainment events, we will also be hosting several banquets, conferences and trade shows over the next month. Our goal for the fiscal year (Oct. 1 – Sept. 30) is to break the 200,000 mark in attendance, which hasn’t been done since 1999. So far, we have already hosted over 60,000 people, so we are well on our way to meeting that goal. Of course none of this would be possible without the support of the community. So, thanks very much for your support. Hopefully we’ll see you again (and again) over the next few weeks!

Until next week,

Todd

Are there any concerts on the horizon? I lived in Tupelo a few years back and there seemed to be a big country act every month or so. I saw Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts, Brooks and Dunn, Alabama, Hank Jr., and Lynyrd Skynrd w/ the Allman Brothers in what seems like a 6 month span. Maybe a little more time than that. I miss the big country acts.

    Farley,

Looking at our upcoming schedule, it would be difficult to fit any more shows into the upcoming two months. We are talking to promoters and agents daily about other possible shows for later in 2008.

In years past we had a problem with bringing too many similar shows into the market at roughly the same time. This led to disappointing sales and hurt our reputation as a concert destination with those in the industry. We are trying to walk the fine line between keeping the community entertained while making sure that our shows are successful for the promoters, bands, and agents who risk an enormous amount of money on each show.

Thanks for the update. Really enjoyed your talk at Kiwanis today. Thanks for what you are all doing to bring more entertainment to Northeast Mississippi.
