“American Idol,” Jan. 16

16 Jan

Yep, your next “American Idol” may come from Saltillo.

Drew Poppelreiter, 24, of Saltillo, made it through to at least the Hollywood round of “American Idol” tonight.

In a segment that lasted a couple of minutes, “AI” cameras followed Drew to his family’s farm in Saltillo. In the audition round, he sang George Strait’s “Check Yes or No.” Judge Simon Cowell, who’s never been a country fan, said no right away. Randy Jackson said yes, and Paula Abdul said yes but said his performance lacked a “wow” factor. Drew’s “yes ma’am”‘s and “no sir”‘s were well noticed by Randy, who called him a “true southern gentleman.”

We at the Journal have heard rumors about Drew for about a week now but I haven’t had much luck in contact his family (I’m pretty sure that contacting him would get him disqualified — contestants are hardly ever allowed press interviews while the show’s going on). Hopefully we can get things working soon and have a story about Drew and his family in the Journal!

OK. Drew’s segment was super exciting for us in NEMiss, but lots of other things happened on tonight’s show. So let’s get to it, shall we?

Tonight’s audition city was Dallas.

There were good singers, there were bad singers, but most of all I came away from it with two thoughts:

  • Soo, soo sick of little blonde gals wishing they were the next Carrie Underwood. Trust me…you’re not.
  • What’s with all the sob stories? Sure, I want to know about these people, but these depressing stories are too much.

Anyway. Lots more people made it to Hollywood with Drew, so let’s take a gander at them.

The first was Jessica Brown, a young mom and former drug addict, who sang “I’ll Stand By You.” She was OK.

Alaina Whitaker, seemingly a Carrie wannabe, sang “Stronger” by Faith Hill and Simon totally got it right when he told her she isn’t as good as she thinks she is. Going to Hollywood anyway.

Zpia is a striking model and singer who took on “Got to Use My Imagination.” She’s my favorite so far, and while the judges put her through, they weren’t crazy about her.

Another Mississippi boy — Brandon Green from Lucedale (that’s near the coast for us NEMissers). He sang “Rich Girl” (*sigh* breath of fresh air), and was pretty good. Creepy factor, though: he keeps his own fingernails after peeling them off. Way to make us look crazy down here in MS, Brandon.

Kayla Hatfield made it through by doing, I’m sorry, a bad version of “Piece of My Heart.” Adorable personality, but she made it through? Really?……….

Simon also lost his mind when he dubbed Katy Malloy “the best” he’s heard so far this season. She was great but not “the best” (my heart still belongs to Zpia).

Kyle Ensley wants to be the next governor of Oklahoma. The judges put him through to Hollywood even though they were a little shaky about him. He sang “Somebody to Love” by Queen.

Colton Swon (I’m pretty sure that name’s way misspelled) sang “Boondocks” by Little Big Town. Good version, but yeah, a little karaoke/bar-ish.

Nina Shaw didn’t impress with “Run to You” but did a much better job on “Feeling Good.” I think she’ll be interesting to hear later on.

Next week is San Diego…

I’m not crazy about Pia, either, but Kayla Hatfield? Were they desperate for a warm body? She’s sweet and bubbly, but that’s all she has to offer, because she can’t sing.

    Hi Pam,

Exactly!!! Adorable girl, but that singing was terrible. I’m not sure what’s up with that but I doubt she’ll make it past Hollywood.

Zpia striking? Kinda looked like Grace Jones. She over sang as well. Too many “Yeahs” and “Uh huh’s” in her performance. Just sing the dang words!

Yeah, didn’t care for Pia. She did look like Grace Jones! lol There were a lot of look-a-likes auditioning the past two days.

No matter who she looked like, she looks interesting. Like she’s got a lot of personal style and I think that will go into her music.

And yes, lots of look-a-likes. So far no one has taken my heart and ran with it, but there are a couple of alright folks.

Not sure she has personal style. She is a model. Someone made the style for her. Cough, Grace Jones, Cough.

A pre-made style is always a possibility, farley. Of course, there are plenty of rumors across the Internet that those who are getting through to Hollywood have already had professional experience, whether it’s in singing, modeling or acting. And I remember she said she was a “professional” model.

From the hype on other blogs and Web sites, it looks like Kristy Cook is an early favorite for lots of people.

I rewatched her debut and was not that impressed. She reminds me of Fantasia, who was easily my least favorite idol. I don’t like the “yeah yeah yeah’s” Fantasia added to each song, which Pia seems to do.

Kristy seems like a Carrie clone. She is good, but it’s like deja vu all over again.

I like the creepy guy in the hats style that’s in the post above my last post! Kinda Amish chic!

Stumbled on this blog….enjoy your style and input! It’s exciting that we have a local guy going to Hollywood!!!

I love your pic, is it a drawing? I do pencil portriates and was just wandering. Either way it’s very becoming.

I’m looking forward to reading more of your insight to AI!

    Hi Lindafrom tupelo,

Thanks so much! That’s very sweet of you! 🙂

You mean the picture of myself? Actually it’s just a photo, taken very badly at a concert! My best friend Hannah and I went to see AFI last February, and we took a photo of ourselves in the dark club just before the show started. It washed us out so bad but we both love the photo. So I cut myself out and put it up here. 🙂

    Howdy farley,

Yeah, I’m actually not that big of a Kristy Lee Cook fan, but you can really never tell from just that one audition.
LOL — TOTALLY agree with you on the Amish chic! 🙂

Just another comment to say, wow, I put a lot of 🙂 ‘s in that last comment. That’s kind of scary.
