A movie for music lovers

9 Jan

Do you love music?
Do you love movies?
Do you love movies about music?
Do you have a soul?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you’ll love and adore “Once.”

The best plot synopsis I’ve found is this one from metacritic.com: “A modern day musical set on the streets of Dublin. Featuring Glen Hansard from the Irish band The Frames, the film tells the story of a street musician and a Czech immigrant during an eventful week as they write, rehearse and record songs that reveal their unique love story.”

This isn’t a musical in the sense of elaborate dance numbers and bursting into song while eating lunch. The story is about music, and the music this pair writes reflects their feelings for each other. It’s quite beautiful and really shows what music is all about – feelings, emotions and relating to each other.

The music is really the star. The minute the movie finished, I bought the soundtrack from iTunes and I’ve listened to it constantly since. It’s sort of Damien Rice-y, maybe a touch of Dido, maybe. Anyway, it’s good.

The movie is very simple, charming and elegant.  Anyone who loves music and movies will fall in love with “Once.”
