In the Arena, 12/14

14 Dec

Thanks for all of the comments you guys have made over the past two weeks. I have tried to answer each of them. I’m always up for discussion, so post away!

As Sheena blogged about earlier this week, the greatest rock band of all time played a show in London at the O2 this week. Of course I’m talking about Led Zeppelin. The few clips that I was able to see on YouTube (before Warner Music Group had them yanked down for copyright infringement) showed that the band still has it. Rumors are swirling that a tour is imminent. My personal opinion is that the band may play a handful of dates but will not launch a full-blown tour. Trust me, if there’s any way that we can convince Robert Plant and Jimmy Page to return to Tupelo, we will do it.

Speaking of concerts featuring replacement band members, Blind Melon played shows in Memphis and Starkville this past week. The reports I’ve heard stated that these guys can also still rock. Who knows, maybe we can work them onto our schedule for next year.

For those of you that missed it, Aaron Neville and his quintet (featuring his brother Charles on sax) played a fantastic show at the Arena last Tuesday. The set list featured many of his hits, several choice covers and some Christmas tunes as well. He truly has a remarkable voice.

Shameless self-promotion time: This weekend’s schedule at the Arena features a diverse mix of activities. First, the Reba/Kelly Clarkson show goes on sale this Saturday at 10 a.m. Demand for this show is extremely high, so if you’re thinking about attending the show I recommend buying tickets as soon as possible. Saturday afternoon, public ice skating returns with sessions from 1 – 3 p.m. and 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. Sunday, we will be hosting a cheerleader competition. (We asked if they wanted to perform on the ice, but they declined. I wonder why?)

More ticketing musings: Last week I talked about how ticket prices are set. One thing I glossed over was the secondary market (formerly know as the scalper market). If you don’t want to pay more than the face value for a ticket, please make sure you’re buying tickets from the venue or its’ authorized ticket sellers. A current Google search for tickets for, say, Reba & Kelly Clarkson at the Arena will generate 6,770 links. But guess what? None of the links on the first page are for, which is the authorized website for ticket sales for all Arena events. Just for fun, I clicked on one of the links. The website is advertising rows and seats that do not exist in the building for a price that is four times higher than the face value of the ticket. In the end it’s your money, but my advice would be to steer clear of these sites.

That’s all I have for this week. Talk to you again next Friday.

Do I have to pick just one? Tell you what: I’ll list several in my next blog. I can tell you that Milli Vanilli will not be on my list…

Do you think there is any chance the Eagles would come back to Tupelo. They are excellent!
