Soul Patrol rocks Tupelo

2 Jun

Taylor Hicks has got to be exhausted.

The 2006 “American Idol” winner sweat, sang and danced his way into the hearts of Tupelo fans this evening as he performed at the Tupelo Elvis Presley Festival.

A pretty huge crowd — many of whom sported “Soul Patrol” T-shirts — awaited him, and he didn’t disappoint.  His 75-minute  set included his own hits, as well as bits and snippets from cover tunes.

Hicks opened the show with covers of “Green-Eyed Lady” and “Call Me the Breeze,” then flew into his own material. The audience stayed on their feet and he kept them dancing throughout the show.

“I appreciate all those folks who voted for me,” he said. “I never told anybody, but I voted too. I guess you know that now.”

Hicks used a guitar for many of the tunes, but he truly showed off when he played the harmonica.

His set felt like a big jam session, as he’d start his own tune and then throw in a line from an older song (like the Stones’ “Miss You”) or just lift whole parts of a song. He did a great job of his covers, which also included Johnny Rivers’ “Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu,” Ray Charles’ “What’d I Say” and Joe Cocker’s “Feeling Alright.”

Hicks showed off his signature dance moves and had thoroughly sweat through his black Stax T-shirt and gray jacket by the end of the night.

“Everybody says I dance like Elvis but look like Joe Cocker,” he said, “but I think I’d rather have it the other way.”

Hicks was called back to the stage for an encore, and he and his band, the Little Memphis Blues Orchestra, tore through “Soul Thing.”

He left his fans still standing, hollering and having a good time, and you don’t get much better than that.

And, last but not least, a huge congratulations to Derek Stone for winning the Unicel Battle of the Bands. Stone and his band played before Bliss (who opened for Hicks), and they did a terrific job.  Congrats, guys.:)

Thanks for the great review of Taylor Hicks. He is the most hardworking on stage of any performer I have ever seen. You will have to catch him somewhere with his awesome tour band after his summer tour starts on June 15. No concert is ever the same.

Jamband sound is absolutely right! With Taylor Hicks, you can always get a delightful surprise. He hits the stage, shows his glee at having the opportunity to entertain, says a few words then its a music smorgasbord. Each concert is different, the music is hot, the band rocks, and Taylor Hicks is explosive. Be sure to catch one of his concerts — whenever and wherever you can. You won’t be dissappointed

I am surprised that he didn’t do any Elvis songs at the Elvis festival–but no matter–Taylor always puts on a great show–I have seen him twice–and each show is totally different-but also totally Taylor Hicks–a unique and very blessed performer. If you get a chance go see him-you won’t be disappointed.

I was there and it was classic Taylor. A little different from his album tour because that has a different band but awesome just the same. He just puts sooo much of himself into entertaining us that people need to give him a LOT more credit than he’s getting so far. I had never heard a lot of these songs before Taylor but that doesn’t me I don’t love them or that type music. It’s a lot better than most of the screaming or thuggy music that gets most of radio airplay these day. Buy Taylor and Support Taylor!!!

Thank you so much for the great review of Taylor, another reporter/writer/reviewer who actually “gets” Taylor and his music, a performer unlike anyone else out there. See him in person, run, don’t walk to your nearest ticket outlet and don’t let the summer go buy without at least one Taylor Hicks concert, you will not regret it!

I LOVED this review! Am going to see him at House of Blues in Dallas the end of August. It will be my first Taylor concert, and I can hardly wait to see this guy live and in person. Have heard there is nothing anywhere that can compare to a Taylor Hicks concert!

I was there too and Taylor was as always, great! You can go see him 10 times and you will have 10 different concert experiences but the one thing all will have in common is they will all be incredible and will leave you trying to figure out how you can get to the next one.

It was so great to read this review, and know that even in Tupelo, they booked Taylor and saw the Elvis similarities in his performances that we have been seeing. He is back doing what he was born to do!! He is such an awesome LIVE performer, and has such a natural charisma with an audience. I know he has a blast with LMBO on stage, and doing a concert like this would seem like R&R for him. I wish I could have been there. When that Man starts to sweat, it’s so sweet, it’s part of his southern boy charm! Love, Love, Love that man Taylor Hicks!! He’s just the best!!!!!

Just got home from Tupelo. What a blast! All the great Elvis music and then Taylor Hicks. It just doesn’t get any better than that. And, as always, the Little Memphis Blues Orchestra did an excellent job. Thanks for the great review!

Taylor was in his usual great form. He is truly an entertainer and he never disappoints a crowd. He is doing what he was born to do. Go Taylor!!

Well, I wasn’t there but I know exactly what the excitement was all about! I saw Taylor in Portland & he is a genuine performer. He owned that stage & he was captivating. Oh, did I mention he’s kinda cute too?! Ü
