What’s Going On - “X-Files,” “Days,” “Reaper”

May 13, 2008 · No Comments

Happy Tuesday, Scene cats.

  • Anyone else get the feeling that if “Days of Our Lives” was canceled, it would really wouldn’t be dead, it would just be buried alive like Marlena was that one time? Anyway. “Days” could be canceled, but Emmy noms could save it.
  • Anyone who missed my birthday and wants to make up for it – The Swell Season, Iron & Wine and Bill Callahan are touring (closest date: Nashville). OK – I’m mostly a Swell Season fan, but still…sounds like a good night anyway.
  • Want to see the Foxboro Hot Tubs? Me too. Closest tour date is Little Rock.
  • Color me confused: I thought “Reaper” and “Aliens in America” had been canceled, but now they’ve been renewed. Whatevs – not like I can watch either anyway.
  • Click here to stream records by Death Cab, Cherish and Jason Mraz.

Who’s your “American Idol” this year?

David Cook?
Syesha?
David Archuleta?
David Archuleta’s dad?

The top 3 – sans Daddy Dearest, thankfully – compete tonight on “American Idol.” Check back here for a recap!

Where’s In the Arena?

May 9, 2008 · 1 Comment

Hey guys,

Todd Hunt is taking a break from In the Arena this week.

He’ll be back next week and I’m sure he’ll have plenty of stories to tell about Soulja Boy and Lil Mama coming to town. :)

What’s Going On - Eddy Arnold, The Office, Madonna

May 8, 2008 · No Comments

Hope this post finds you well – it’s been hairy out in Northeast Mississippi this morning.  I think one of my neighbors took a photo of a tornado behind our apartments…meanwhile I was hiding in my downstairs bathroom, wishing John Dolusic would stop saying the name of my road. Eek. We made it out OK – hope any and all Scene readers did too. :)

Anyway, here are some news updates…

  • Country star Eddy Arnold has died. He was one of my grandma’s favorites. :(
  • Madonna’s going on tour this summer - Atlanta and dates in Florida and Texas are the ones closest to here.
  • Entertainment Weekly has a first look at “W,” the Bush biopic.

What’s Going On - The Police, Ting Tings, fashion

May 7, 2008 · No Comments

Happy Wednesday, my dears. Here are some newsy bits…

  • If your favorite music is out of print, Amazon will have a new service to fix that.

Two happys for you, too:

Wondering what uber-catchy song is in the new iPod commercial? It’s “Shut Up and Let Me Go” by The Ting Tings. Just last week iTunes featured The Ting Tings’ “Great DJ” as a free single of the week. I’m really getting into this band.

And a fashion-y bit: Keds has a line of shoes out designed by rock poster designer Eleanor Grosch. My mom got me this pair of shoes, and I am in love. This is the third year Grosch and Keds have created shoes together but I’m only just now discovering them. Grosch has designed posters for the likes of Wilco and Death cab.

Pick up a pair if you’re so inclined!

“American Idol,” May 6

May 6, 2008 · No Comments

It was Rock and Roll Hall of Fame night for the Top 4.

The first round of songs…

David Cook sang “Hungry Like the Wolf.” He said he’d do something with it but he didn’t, and he was WAY louder than the band. Being a Duran Duran fan, I really didn’t like this.
Randy said: It was an OK song choice.
Paula said: He left her with a big appetite. (I couldn’t have made that up if I tried)
Simon said: It was a little copy cat in that he didn’t make it his own, but it was good enough to get him in the Top 3.

Syesha Mercado sang Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary,” complete with a cute Tina-ish dress and dance moves. It felt like she was playing the role as Tina — so I wondered where Syesha was in all of that.
Randy said: She was in the zone, and she’s showing heat late in the competition when she needs it.
Paula said: She looks like a star.
Simon said: It was a bad impersonation of Tina Turner. Syesha said she was trying to have fun, and Simon said, “I didn’t.”

Jason Castro sang Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff.” It’s probably an understatement to say the judges hated it.
Randy said: It was really karaoke Bob Marley and there was nothing special about it.
Paula said: He did perform to the audience more and he’s real and geniune.
Simon said: It was “utterly atrocious…I don’t know what you’re thinking.” To which Jason replied, “I was thinking, BOB MARLEY!”

David Archuleta sang “Stand By Me,” which was totally safe in my opinion. Still it was probably better than anything else we’d seen so far.
Randy said: He’s trying to win the show and it was hot.
Paula said: He’s learning from the mentors and the judges to get better every week.
Simon said: It was a very good song choice and the best performance so far.

The second round of songs…

David Cook sang “Baba O’Riley.” I’m starting to tire of good David Cook, so I wasn’t moved by this.
Randy said: It was the David Cook they know and love.
Paula said: She was humbled to sit there and watch him.
Simon said: “Welcome back, David Cook.”

Syesha sang “A Change is Gonna Come.” I liked her vocals, not necessarily much else, though.
Randy said: He didn’t like it as much as the first song and it felt disconnected.
Paula said: It was beautiful. “Welcome to your dream, Syesha — this is it.” And Syesha cried quite a bit.
Simon said: He agreed with Paula (more crying from Syesha) and she sang it very well.

Jason Castro sang “Mr. Tambourine Man” and completely forgot a couple of lines. Not a good night for sir Castro.
Randy said: He was not in the zone.
Paula said: “The song didn’t blow me away but you blow me away.”
Simon said: “Pack your bags.”

David Archuleta sang “Love Me Tender.” Maybe I’m too much of an Elvis fan that I don’t like people messing with Elvis, but I just didn’t like it much.
Randy said: It was another great performance.
Paula said: It was one of her favorite performances of his.
Simon said: He didn’t just beat the competition, he crushed the competition.

My pick to go home is Syesha — because I have a feeling all of Jason’s fans will flood the lines trying to keep him in despite a particularly horrible night. But who knows!

Stay tuned to Scene Now tomorrow night to see who’s kicked off!

Memphis in Mud - My Chemical Romance

May 5, 2008 · 13 Comments

The Memphis in May Beale St. Music Festival didn’t earn the nickname “Memphis in Mud” for nothing.

Of course, it wouldn’t really be Memphis in May without a ton of mud and rain.

My best friend, Hannah, and I went to Memphis Friday to celebrate our birthdays (hers was in March; mine’s tomorrow). I can’t give you guys a full recap of what happened this weekend, but I can tell you what we experienced – and it was quite an adventure. And since it’s long – more after the jump! (more…)
